Unibet parent FDJ commits to UK market despite revenue headwinds and regulatory pressures
The operator remains committed to the UK market despite Q1 revenue suffering, and the RGD hike threatening further strain.
French gaming giant Française des Jeux (FDJ) has firmly rejected suggestions it might retreat from the UK market, despite Unibet's challenging first quarter performance and mounting regulatory costs threatening operator margins across the British gambling sector.
Speaking at the company's quarterly results briefing, FDJ's betting and gaming chief outlined a comprehensive turnaround strategy for the Unibet brand, emphasising the strategic importance of the UK market to the group's international expansion plans.
The commitment comes as operators grapple with significant headwinds in Britain, including the recent Remote Gaming Duty (RGD) increase from 21% to 25% - a move that has prompted some international operators to reconsider their UK presence entirely. The tax hike, which took effect in April, represents an additional £40 million annual burden across the sector, according to industry estimates.
Unibet's Q1 struggles reflect broader market pressures
Unibet's first quarter revenue decline mirrors challenges faced across the UK online gambling landscape, where operators are contending with a perfect storm of regulatory pressures. Beyond the RGD increase, enhanced affordability checks and stricter advertising restrictions have compressed margins whilst limiting customer acquisition opportunities.
The Gambling Commission's ongoing review of financial risk checks has created additional uncertainty, with proposals for mandatory affordability assessments at relatively low spend thresholds causing particular concern amongst operators about potential customer churn.
From a fintech perspective, the regulatory environment has also complicated payment processing, with enhanced due diligence requirements and open banking integrations adding operational complexity and costs for operators like Unibet.
Turnaround strategy focuses on differentiation
FDJ's turnaround plan reportedly centres on leveraging Unibet's technological capabilities and brand heritage to differentiate from competitors in an increasingly commoditised market. This includes enhanced personalisation through data analytics and improved customer experience across mobile platforms.
The strategy aligns with broader industry trends toward technology-driven customer retention, as operators seek to maximise lifetime value from existing customers rather than pursuing costly acquisition strategies in the current regulatory climate.
Industry analysts suggest FDJ's commitment to the UK market reflects confidence in long-term stability, despite short-term regulatory headwinds. The British online gambling market remains one of Europe's largest and most mature, with established payment infrastructure and consumer adoption that continues to attract international operators.
Regulatory outlook remains challenging
However, further regulatory changes loom on the horizon. The Government's white paper response and upcoming Gambling Act review could introduce additional compliance costs and operational restrictions, potentially testing FDJ's resolve regarding its UK commitment.
The company's decision to maintain its British presence contrasts with some competitors who have scaled back UK operations or exited entirely, suggesting confidence in Unibet's ability to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape whilst maintaining profitability.
